I Was a Coach Before I Was a Developer

I Was a Coach Before I Was a Developer

Before anything else, I’d like to share my portfolio - or rather, my personal website.

The goal is simple: to help anyone discover who I am, what I do, and how they can connect with me, wherever they are in the world.

But before talking about the website itself, I think it’s important to explain what brought me here. Because when people look at my journey today, it’s easy to assume that everything started with technology. The truth, however, is a little different.

Before Code, There Was Communication

Long before I started building applications or working on web projects, I spent several years in English clubs and training rooms helping people gain confidence in speaking English.

I still remember those moments when a simple question could fill an entire room with silence. Participants often knew the answer, yet hesitated to speak. The fear of making mistakes, being judged, or simply not finding the right words was often stronger than their desire to express themselves.

That is where my professional journey truly began.

I often mention this because many people know me today as a full-stack developer and naturally assume that coaching came later. In reality, it was exactly the opposite. Communication played a central role in my life long before technology did.

Over time, I realized that what fascinated me was not just language learning itself, but the opportunity to help someone find their voice and use it with confidence.

Code came later, but it never replaced that mission. It simply gave it a different form.

English Found Me Before Technology

My interest in English dates back to my middle school years, but it was in 2020, when I joined the English Department at the University of Adjarra, that this passion became something much more serious.

Like any demanding environment, it required learning how to grow alongside talented and motivated people. That period taught me that consistency often matters more than raw talent. Every challenge became an opportunity to learn, and every improvement-no matter how small-strengthened my determination.

It was also during this time that I joined the Overcomers English Club. What began as a learning environment gradually became a place of commitment and responsibility. Over the years, I moved from being a participant to becoming a facilitator, with the privilege of continuing today to support and train many learners.

A few years later, I had the honor of co-founding the Speak American English Institute in Porto-Novo alongside Coach Leonel Affognon, Coach Maria Agboyinou Houssou, and Coach Christian Hougbedji.

This experience taught me a truth that grammar books rarely mention:

We do not simply teach a language. We help people believe that their voice deserves to be heard.

The moments that stay with me the most are not the ones where a learner perfectly recites a complex grammar rule. They are the moments when someone who once avoided speaking finally stands before a group and expresses themselves with confidence.

Witnessing that transformation is difficult to describe, but it is what gives meaning to everything else.

Then I Learned to Build

If coaching taught me how to support people, development emerged from a different motivation: the desire to solve real-world problems.

Throughout my experiences, I repeatedly saw promising projects slowed down by the lack of appropriate tools. Dynamic organizations were still managing their activities manually. Ambitious businesses struggled to establish a strong online presence. Valuable initiatives simply lacked the digital solutions needed to grow.

For a long time, I found myself thinking that someone should build those tools.

Then one day, a simple question came to mind: why wait for someone else?

That question led me to ESCAE Benin, where I studied Information Systems and Software Engineering. I approached software development with the same mindset that had helped me progress in English: curiosity, hard work, and a great deal of patience.

At that time, learning to code often meant spending hours searching for the source of an error, testing different approaches, and starting over until a solution finally appeared. It was not always comfortable, but every challenge I overcame strengthened both my understanding and my confidence.

My first internship in front-end development at SonghaĂŻ in 2023 gave me practical exposure to HTML, CSS, and responsive design principles. It was my first real immersion into the professional world of technology.

Later, my experience at DigiWeb SARL marked an important stage in my growth. There, I worked with Java Spring Boot, PHP, Laravel, REST APIs, Git, and most importantly, real projects designed to solve real problems.

Little by little, technologies that once seemed intimidating became familiar tools. PHP, in particular, stopped feeling like a mysterious language and became a practical way to build useful solutions and transform ideas into working products.

Coaching and Coding: The Same Profession in Different Forms

The more experience I gained, the more I realized that coaching and software development are far less different than they appear.

In both cases, the goal is to listen, understand, and solve a problem. Whether a learner is struggling with a challenge or an application is behaving unexpectedly, the solution is rarely found through haste. It comes from observation, asking the right questions, and moving forward methodically.

This similarity continues to shape the way I work today.

When I prepare a coaching session, I focus on making ideas easier to understand.

When I design an interface or build an application, I pursue exactly the same objective.

In both situations, the mission is ultimately to remove the obstacles that prevent people from understanding, acting, or communicating effectively.

Why I Refuse to Choose

People sometimes ask whether I consider myself more of a developer or a coach.

The truth is that I do not feel the need to choose.

Coaching still occupies an important place in my life. I continue to facilitate activities related to English learning and regularly support individuals who want to improve their communication skills, prepare for interviews, or gain confidence when speaking in public.

At the same time, I build digital solutions that address needs on a larger scale.

These two activities nourish different dimensions of who I am. One constantly reminds me of the importance of people. The other gives me the ability to create tools capable of generating lasting impact.

Giving up either one would mean abandoning an essential part of what drives me.

Why This Blog Exists

This blog was born from that dual identity.

I wanted to create a space where I could freely share my experiences, reflections, and lessons learned throughout my journey.

Sometimes you will find articles about web development, APIs, programming, artificial intelligence, or digital transformation. Other times, the topics will revolve around communication, English learning, leadership, or self-confidence.

At first glance, these subjects may seem unrelated.

Yet they all share something in common: they are about growth, learning, and how we can use our skills to create greater value for the people around us.

My goal is for this space to remain authentic, useful, and accessible while reflecting both my journey and my interests.

One Last Word

If you have ever felt like you were starting something while everyone around you seemed miles ahead, then we probably share a common experience.

I have felt that way many times, both while learning English and while learning software development.

Looking back, I realize that the most meaningful progress rarely comes during the moments when everything feels easy. It often emerges during periods of doubt, when we choose to keep moving forward anyway.

So whether you are here to talk about technology, communication, learning, or simply out of curiosity, welcome.

Take a seat.

We have a lot to explore together.
